Formaldehyde: History and Importance

Formaldehyde: History and Importance 1.0INTRODUCTION Formaldehyde is the primary individual from the aldehyde family (CH2O) and is the most significant aldehyde in the environment.3 It is a normally happening synthetic and a result of most living beings, including human, modern and regular procedures. Formaldehyde structures from the inadequate burning of carbon-containing materials; smoke from woodland fires, in car fumes, and in tobacco smoke. Air formaldehyde is shaped by the activity of daylight and oxygen on methane and other hydrocarbons.2 Due to its straightforward nature, metabolic procedures break formaldehyde into carbon dioxide. Formaldehyde doesn't collect in the earth or inside plants, creatures or individuals, as it rapidly separates in the body and the atmosphere.1 It has a sharp scent and is an aggravation and is an aggravation to eyes, nose and throat, even at low focuses. The suggested smell recognition limit is between 0.05 1ppm.3 Formaldehyde is a significant modern concoction and is utilized in the assembling of numerous mechanical items and purchaser articles. In excess of 50 parts of industry currently use formaldehyde, fundamentally as fluid arrangements and formaldehyde-containing saps. In 1995, the interest for formaldehyde in the three significant markets Northern America, Western Europe, Japan was 4.1ãÆ'-106 t/a [Chem. Frameworks Inc.: Formaldehyde (April 1996).]. History of Formaldehyde Exploration in the mid 1800s by Liebig found the synthetic piece and nature of different aldehydes barring formaldehyde because of the straightforwardness with which methanol was oxidized to formic corrosive and further combined to carbon dioxide and water.5 In 1859, Alexandra Mikhailovich Butlerov accidentally found formaldehyde because of his proposed combination of methylene glycol [CH2 (OH)2]. During his lab try, Butlerov watched the particular smell of the formaldehyde arrangement while hydrolysing methylene acetic acid derivation, which disintegrated to shape formaldehyde and water. 5 He additionally delivered formaldehyde in different structures which drove him to distribute a point by point report of formaldehyde arrangement, its gas and polymer. He gave extra proof of its structure and depicted the concoction responses along with the production of hexamethylenetetramine, [(CH2)6N4] on responding with alkali, (NH3). The fundamental path by which formaldehyde is as yet being delivered till date was found by A.W. Hofmann yet with different impetuses. In 1868, Hofmann made a progressive forward leap by passing a blend of methanol and air over a warmed platinum winding. This procedure is at present industrialized by utilization of a metal impetus. More than two decades later, the confinement and sanitization of formaldehyde was accomplished by Friedrich Von Stradonitz (1892). 4 1882 checked two critical upgrades in formaldehyde research. Kekule at that point portrayed the arrangement of unadulterated formaldehyde and Tollens found a strategy for directing the methanol fume: air proportion, in this way influencing the yield of the reaction.6 The winding platinum impetus was supplanted with progressively proficient copper cloth in 1886 by Leow. Business production of formaldehyde was started by a German firm, Mercklin and Losekann in 1889 with the primary utilization of silver impetus protected by Hugo Blank, another German organization in 1910. 6 Modern improvement proceeded from 1900 to 1905, when plant sizes, stream rates, yields, and proficiency were expanded. In 1905, Badische AnilinSoda-Fabrik (BASF) began to fabricate formaldehyde by a persistent procedure utilizing a crystalline silver impetus. Formaldehyde yield was 30 kg/d as a fluid 30 wt% arrangement. The methanol required for the creation of formaldehyde was at first gotten from the lumber business via carbonizing wood. The advancement of the high-pressure amalgamation of methanol by BASF in 1925 permitted the creation of formaldehyde on a genuine modern scale. 6 Significance of Formaldehyde For quite a few years, formaldehyde has been utilized reliably in a wide scope of items, going from individual cleanliness, to medication, to building items and considerably more. A wide range of pitches are made from formaldehyde, which are thus used to make different materials having various properties. Formaldehyde subordinates are utilized as additives in close to home cleanliness items since they eliminate microbes or they are utilized to make different items progressively viable as far as frothing activity, for example, cleansers and cleansers. Its flexible science and exceptional properties have made applications for utilization of formaldehyde in a wide range of consistently items, for example, plastics, covering, apparel, saps, pastes, meds, immunizations and the film utilized in x-beams. One of the main advantages you get from formaldehyde science is as a kid, when you got your immunizations for youth illnesses. These incorporate diphtheria, polio and flu, to give some examples. Since it additionally goes about as an additive, formaldehyde assumes a basic job in our clinical schools, saving dead bodies utilized in showing human life systems. It has been utilized for tissue and organ conservation for over a century and has incredibly helped the development of natural science.1 Significance of Green Processes The idea of Green Chemistry decreases or wipe out the utilization or age of risky substances in the plan, assembling and use of synthetic items. This aides in managing the consistently developing increment to secure the earth and the idea of maintainability. A great deal of accentuation depends on the innovative work period of every concoction or item, to reduce issues influencing human wellbeing and ecological contamination. For each concoction or given item, the accompanying rules ought to oversee the decision of route:7 * Choice of feed-stock (costs are important obviously, yet in addition all out assets, vitality, squander, and so on in the assembling of the given feed-stock are significant variables) * Choice of response way (limit vitality prerequisites by utilization of specific impetuses) * Choice of impetus (productivity, division from item, reusing of impetus) * Down-stream preparing/unit activities (limiting the quantity of stages important to acquire the item in the state wanted by the client) * Minimizing the sum toxins, yet additionally the volume of waste streams (profluent/off-gases and strong waste) * Recycling of assistant, side-, and middle items into the procedure. This report centers around physical and synthetic properties of formaldehyde (CH2O), its creation procedures and advancement through time as it attempts to fit in with a portion of the standards of green science. 2.0PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS FORMS OF FORMALDEHYDE Formaldehyde is more convoluted than numerous basic carbon mixes in light of the fact that it receives various structures. Formaldehyde is a gas at room temperature, however the gas promptly changes over to an assortment of subordinates. These subordinates by and large carry on likewise to vaporous formaldehyde and are utilized in industry.4 Physical Properties I. Monomeric formaldehyde: This type of formaldehyde [50-00-0], CH2O is a dull gas that has a foul, overwhelming smell and is an aggravation to eyes, nose, throat and skin. Monomeric formaldehyde melts at - 19 °C, and hardens at - 80 °C to give a white glue. The fluid and gas stages polymerise promptly at low and typical temperatures up to 80 °C. Unadulterated formaldehyde gas, then again, doesn't polymerise between 80 100 °C and carries on as a perfect gas. In spite of the fact that it isn't monetarily accessible in this structure, it very well may be set up in the research center by the Spencer and Wilde method.6, 3 The atomic equation of vaporous formaldehyde in surrounding air is demonstrated as follows. II. Trioxane: 1, 3, 5-Trioxane is a stable cyclic trimer of formaldehyde, C3H6O3. It shows up as a white strong with a chloroform-like smell however doesn't make any type of aggravation living things. The unadulterated type of trioxane softens at 61 62 °C bubbles at 11 °5C and has a glimmer purpose of 45 °C. Trioxane is utilized as a feedstock for certain plastics, strong fuel tablet equations and as a steady wellspring of formaldehyde in laboratories.8, 3 III. Paraformaldehyde: this is a drab, granular strong with a sharp and bothering smell. It is set up by buildup of methylene glycol (HOCH2 OH), and its piece is best communicated by the recipe HO-(HCHO) Q-H. Paraformaldehyde dissolves over a wide temperature extend (120-170C), which relies upon the level of polymerization. It has comparable utilizations to formaldehyde; it is regularly utilized as a wellspring of formaldehyde for sterilizing enormous areas.3 IV. Formalin: The essential market for formaldehyde is in fluid structure, Formalin. It is an away from with the trademark scent of formaldehyde. Methanol is typically present, 6-15%, to smother polymerisation. In fluid stage, the predominant type of formaldehyde is methylene glycol and polyoxymethlene glycol for concentrated solutions.3 Concoction Reactions of Formaldehyde I. Decay: In warm disintegration, formaldehyde is generally steady. At 150C, formaldehyde experiences heterogeneous deterioration to shape methanol and carbon dioxide. Above 350C, the response breaks down to frame carbon dioxide hydrogen. Impetuses, for example, platinum, copper, chromium and aluminum are engaged with this decay response to frame methanol, methyl formate, formic corrosive, carbon dioxide and methane.6 2HCHO à ¢Ã¢â‚¬ ’CH3OH+CO HCHO à ¢Ã¢â‚¬ ’CO+ H2 II. Polymerisation: At room temperatures and exceptionally low weights, formaldehyde monomer fumes will in general polymerise while at higher temperatures, monomeric HCHO can be kept up promptly for a few hours without polymerisation at a balance fume pressure. In the watery stage, formaldehyde is oxidized promptly by even mellow oxidizing operators, for example, Ag(NH3)2+, and this property has been misused in the advancement of a few wet-substance systematic techniques for formaldehyde.3 III. Questions: 1.Discuss about the Difference between Emergent Leadership, Shared Leadership and Assigned Leadership. 2.Discuss about the Use of innovation as a specialized device in e-administration versus F2F initiative. Answers: 1.Difference between Emergent Leadership, Shared Leadership and Assigned Leadership New Leadership-A representative of an organization is considered as new administration when the individual enthusiastically takes errands, energizes agreement among different laborers of the organization and furthermore causes different workers to finish their progressing assignments in a superior manner and if there exists any issue in finishing the undertakings (Kayworth Leidner, 2017). Before getting the sobriquet of authority, one needs to demonstrate that he/she is an emanant pioneer. This initiative gives an advantage to know the updates on an advancement ahead of time and watch that the individual can do the activity or not. A worker of an organization needs more gratefulness from the emanant pioneers in contrast with doled out pioneers. Doled out Leadership-The standard from their own situation of the allocated pioneers are determined in the progressive system of the organization. The doled out pioneers assume regard from their workers and the title itself has quality in it (Snellman, 2014). Deciding knowledge, aptitudes to tackle the issues and offer inspiration to the workers to hold their position are for the most part abilities of a doled out administration. Mutual Leadership-The specialists or obligations that are shared among the individuals from a gathering is known as shared administration. In a group, multiple individuals are selected as pioneers and they partition the work among them so that there doesn't exists any infringement among the individual from the gathering and the arrive at its objective effectively. All the pioneers are responsible to one another as they are attempting to accomplish an objective for a group and furthermore keep up its bearing. Positions of authority among the individual from the gathering are given according to their experience. 2.Use of innovation as a specialized apparatus in e-authority versus F2F administration F2F authority is an up close and personal administration that is directed among pioneers and representatives or two pioneers in an eye to eye way. Though, e-initiative otherwise called virtual authority utilizes texts, gatherings over video calls, messages, Skpye or Google Hangouts for conveying. Encountering a total correspondence is refreshing among the representatives or members in a cooperation that is directed in eye to eye (Zander et al., 2012). The members of the correspondence get an opportunity for reacting the data they gets quickly, gives an input and furthermore can thinks about the data that are conveyed to them. F2F correspondence encourages the members to get data direct from the sender diminishes the time, separation and culture between the sender and recipient. E-pioneers impart through Google Hangout, email, messages or video meetings. The utilization of innovation in e-authority gives a great deal of data in a less time stretch and makes a wide cluster of scenes for correspondence. As the relational abilities are disengaged in virtual aptitudes, the pioneers of virtual correspondence centers around task more than the individual connections. For a group to prevail on its objective, compassion trust and connection are likewise fundamental. The virtual communication gives none of the relational connections. The contentions of the relational aptitudes are hard to discover for the e-pioneers. 2.Examples of errand related practices that makes e-initiative compelling The fundamental focal point of errand related initiative is that the pioneer chiefly focus to finish the task that they are taking a shot at. They set a make way and center a helpful objective defining to accomplish their objectives. They plan their cutoff times and work in like manner. The structure, objectives and the jobs are separated among the individuals from the gathering in like manner. They fundamentally center to introduce the outcomes that are wanted from them. Two models are refered to beneath that clarifies task situated initiative. M. Pei, a popular American-Chinese modeler in twentieth century. He has structured John F. Kennedy Library and Louver Pyramid (Hambley et al., 2007). He surrendered his work in Harvard where he was working and joined NDRC (National Defense Research Committee). His incredible structure and architecting put him on the map as an undertaking focused pioneer. An honorable specialist and a scientist, Gordon Moore made equation that is notable as Moores Law. He understood the segments on a circuit that is incorporated would be twofold every year, except later he improved the law and assessed each year to each multi year and named it as Moores Law. Moore essentially centered around circuits that contain smaller scale segments and oversee and arrange individuals who are answerable for building them. This made him a well known errand situated pioneer.

William Carney as the first African

Sergeant William Carney was the primary Afro-American trooper who got the esteemed Congressional Medal of Honor. Acknowledgment of Carney’s mental fortitude by granting him the Congressional Medal turned into a huge occasion throughout the entire existence of the Civil War and the battle for the equivalent privileges of African Americans.Advertising We will compose a custom exposition test on William Carney as the primary African-American to Receive the Congressional Medal of Honor explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More The renowned acknowledgment of Carney’s fearlessness was a defining moment throughout the entire existence of African Americans in the military on the grounds that already African Americans had never been granted decorations as well as even were denied the option to participate in the Civil War as a result of the racial biases. â€Å"Many whites accepted that they [African Americans] came up short on the fortitude and knowledge to be com pelling soldiers† (Reef, 2010, p. 61). Be that as it may, in 1863 the Union Army needed to surrender this strategy and begin tolerating African American enlisted people to fortify their gatherings. The Massachusetts 54th Colored Infantry which William Carney participated in February, 1963 was one of the main Afro-American regiments. Showing their fearlessness notwithstanding passing during the attack on Fort Wagner, Carney and his sibling officers figured out how to demonstrate that they had enough mental fortitude and experience for turning out to be powerful warriors. William Carney was one of the troopers of the verifiable fifty-fourth that showed their boldness as well as commitment to the standards of the Civil War during the perilous ambush on Fort Wagner. As indicated by the information of the Congressional Record, â€Å"Despite being shot twice, Carney planted the hues declaring, â€Å"Boys the old banner never contacted the ground† (Congress, 2003, p. 5106). A fter the foes shot Colonel Shaw who drove the 54th and the fighter close to him who conveyed the Union banner, Carney didn't let the banner fall dismissing his own extraordinary agony from his injuries. It not just exhibited his chivalry and good quality notwithstanding demise yet additionally energized different warriors for proceeding with the battle while some of them started to freeze. â€Å"The sight of the national banner reinforced the soldiers’ fortitude and helped them to remember the qualities for which they fought† (Reef, 2010, p. 62). At the point when an officer from a New York regiment offered his assistance in conveying the banner while in transit to a medical clinic, Carney declined any help, conceding that solitary a fighter from 54th could do it. In spite of the fact that Carney got the Congressional decoration just in May 23, 1900, he turned into the primary individual of his race who got such a renowned honor. The acknowledgment of Carney’s m ental fortitude and valor inferred the acknowledgment of knowledge and fearlessness of African-American fighters all in all. After the updates on Carney’s mental fortitude spread all through the nation, a large number of African Americans joined the Union Army and made their commitment as far as possible of the war (Walbridge, 2000, p. 77).Advertising Looking for article on african american? Are Leaders Born Or Made How Do We Identify Leaders Do We Need Leaders Essay

Are Leaders Born Or Made How Do We Identify Leaders Do We Need Leaders In This Current Economic Climate - Essay Example This point has been clarified in the current talk by looking at two changed associations dependent on close to home work understanding. All the while, different parts of pioneer and group conduct, authoritative frameworks, structure and the board ideas have been utilized to clarify administration viability and utilization of the executives ideas. This talk presents a contention on administration adequacy in connection with initiative hypotheses, the board ideas and authoritative culture. Initiative has been characterized from alternate points of view. Authority at work environment has been the focal point of numerous contemporary associations. In opposition to the customary administration ideas and reasoning, the present-day associations accept that initiative is fundamental for authoritative food. Asinine characterizes initiative as the impact relationship among pioneers and supporters who mean genuine change and results that mirror their mutual purposes (2007; p.4). In an authorita tive setting, the basic components in initiative incorporate the pioneer, impact, goal, moral obligation and trustworthiness, change, shared reason, supporters. These components, albeit fundamental in any administration idea, are explicitly huge in an authoritative setting since this setting unites pioneers by excellence of their position and individuals with a reason. Such administration is allocated authority (Northouse, 2009). Another type of authority is emanant initiative, which alludes to administration procured by one’s activities, and capacity to win supporters; this administration is all the more normally found in political gatherings, and lesser in hierarchical arrangements. Initiative has been characterized from multiple points of view by various individuals, and from alternate points of view. One of the expansive definitions proposed by Yuki is that administration is the way toward impacting others to comprehend and concur about what should be done and how to do i t, and the way toward encouraging individual and aggregate endeavors to achieve shared targets (, p.26). As indicated by Bryman, â€Å"leadership is the production of a dream about an ideal future state which tries to entrap all individuals from an association in its net† (1986, p.6). Jackson and Parry (2007) feature three parts of administration, which give adequate motivations to investigate initiative. These perspectives incorporate the insightful idea whether pioneers were conceived or made; furthermore, what are the qualities of a powerful pioneer; thirdly, what is the contrast among administration and the executives. These three perspectives give noteworthy knowledge into the idea of initiative and the board. Hypothetical develop on the idea of initiative is immense and dives profound into angles, for example, individuals’ character, style, foundation and so on (Contingency hypotheses) alongside circumstances (Situational authority), culture, saw esteems, vision (Visionary and transformational administration) and even attributes of supporters. Different initiative attributes have been proposed by numerous specialists, which offered ascend to the quality hypotheses of authority. A portion of the characteristics clarified in these speculations incorporate knowledge, understanding, obligation, certainty, perception, self-roused, passionate insight and so on (Northouse, 2007). Fiedler’s possibility hypothesis of initiative accentuates that leader’s adequacy or the group’s execution is controlled by authority style and situational need. Authority

Grounded Theory

Definition Grounded hypothesis is a subjective way to deal with inquire about that includes the utilization diverse iterative strategies to complete methodical investigation of social wonders. The grounded hypothesis technique is unequivocally applied in the age as well as improvement of new speculations regarding intuitive social inquiries.Advertising We will compose a custom basic composing test on Grounded Theory explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Creswell (2012) uncovers that the grounded hypothesis is appropriate for looking for cutting edge information about a particular social wonder. The grounded hypothesis procedure utilizes abductive as opposed to inductive or deductive thinking. Be that as it may, abductive thinking is a trade off of both inductive and deductive perspectives. Inductive and deductive methods of reasoning look for the best clarification about the subject of study. This trademark makes grounded hypothesis examine fitting for breaking down complicated social events in the general public. Dissimilar to numerous other hypothetical ideas, grounded hypothesis look into employments information to create speculations. For this situation, information is broke down with a perspective on building a hypothesis. The scientist isn't required to move toward extraordinary information with a hypothesis (Lawrence Tar, 2013). Kinds of Grounded Theory Research Designs There are three sorts of grounded hypothesis structures that incorporate efficient, rising, and constructivist grounded hypothesis explore plans. The efficient grounded hypothesis configuration centers around the use of open, pivotal, and particular coding procedures during the time spent information investigation (Creswell, 2012). These deliberate stages empower the analyst to build up a relevant prime example of the normal hypothesis. Then again, the rising structure stresses permits the hypothesis to create from the acquired information. This sort of grounded hypothesi s look into doesn't utilize foreordained stages as in the deliberate grounded hypothesis structure. Finally, the constructivist configuration involves the examination of respondents’ mentalities, values, desires, convictions, and ways of thinking. It tries to look at singular encounters. Procedure of approaching this Research Creswell (2012) clarifies the different unmistakable stages that are associated with the way toward approaching the grounded hypothesis look into. The grounded hypothesis philosophy begins with information assortment. Individual meetings, direct perceptions, and diary data comprise the various methods that specialists use to gather grounded information. The strategy that is utilized to gather information relies upon its capacity to give adaptable data since grounded examine is a powerful procedure. The subsequent advance involves note taking. The insight of the specialist is significant to get applicable data. The affectability of the data that is gather ed during the time spent grounded hypothesis inquire about decides the appropriateness of the created concepts.Advertising Looking for basic composition on reasoning? We should check whether we can support you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In the third step, the specialist is relied upon to look for endorsement and authorization to get to data from significant sources. Fourthly, the grounded hypothesis look into includes deliberate conduction of hypothetical examining. Next, the gathered information is coded to give a structure to building up the foreseen hypothesis. The 6th step involves approval of the created hypothesis. At last, the analyst needs to compose a grounded hypothesis investigate report to help the created hypothesis. Challenges Grounded hypothesis inquire about includes troublesome procedures, for example, assortment and investigation of repetitive information. In reality, the assortment of repeating information, examination, and assurance of ends is tedious. This test essentially influences the capacity of the analyst to keep up never-ending examination of grounded information (Lawrence Tar, 2013). Besides, grounded hypotheses are inferential as opposed to clear. This nature of research confuses the comprehension of unique data. This circumstance influences adaptability and capacity to maintain dependability all through the whole procedure of research. Favorable circumstances and Disadvantages of the Grounded Theory Research Creswell (2012) places that each subjective way to deal with inquire about has its own points of interest and detriments that decide its appropriateness for investigation. Probably the best bit of leeway of the grounded hypothesis approach is its deliberately and thoroughly encircled examination systems. The orderly course of action of the theory’s stages facilitates the assortments, investigation, and age serviceable answers for social issues. Also, the grounded hypothesis look into gives the scient ist rich information that is picked up from the encounters of others. The hypothesis acquires information from encounters relating to various social wonders. This preferred position empowers the scientist to go through old data to accompany elective answers for complex issues. Be that as it may, the grounded hypothesis inquire about has different hindrances. To start with, since the hypothesis is a trade off among inductive and deductive thinking, the favoritism of the data meddles with the reliability and validation of the whole procedure of information examination. Furthermore, the subjective idea of the outcomes that are gotten for the grounded examine process is on occasion questionable for practitioners.Advertising We will compose a custom basic composing test on Grounded Theory explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Field in which the Grounded Theory Research is for the most part broadly utilized The grounded hypothesis inquire about is utilized in numerous fie lds to look for practicable answers for social marvel. Lawrence and Tar (2013) uncover that the grounded hypothesis inquire about has gotten progressively mainstream in leading clinical examinations. Its subjective angles make it suitable for planning, defense, and age of spearheading discoveries that improve the treatment of patients and organization of treatment. Besides, the grounded hypothesis approach is valuable in bookkeeping. Bookkeepers require abductive thinking to assemble and examine coded information. It empowers them to create appropriate hypotheses through the control of bookkeeping information. Bookkeeping rehearses request continuous evaluation of complex data from business records. The investigation of such data requires the utilization of subjective techniques, for example, the grounded hypothesis inquire about. Reference List Creswell, J. (2012). Passions

Passions Edit: Aww, shoot! I wrote you all this blog post last night, before I left the house, and then forgot to publish it. Well, here it is, a year late. And now, to hit the road for Vermont. Hope this helps with those last-minute applications, though. Hola! The title and mini-description attached to this post may have, despite my best efforts, given some of you a clue as to what this post will be about. Anybody who read my last post might also know, as I gave away some spoilers. Brought to you just in time for 2010 (think about it the writing of this post spanned almost TWO YEARS. I should get a raise for that), its Cams thoughts on the college essay process! Huzzah! Three Saturdays ago, I was walking through a far-too-familiar part of campus with my friend Kevin. (Coincidentally, my brother is also named Kevin. Relevant to you? Nope, but you read it anyways. Congratulations, youre procrastinating. Stop procrastinating and skip ahead to the college-relevant material, you slacker.) (Did the previous run-on aside cause you to forget what I was talking about? Good! Some mental exercise for you and literary laziness for me.) Because this year Kevin, a friend from my high school, is like many of you e.g. prefrosh material we were talking about the college essay process. For many people at my school, and many other people I knew, the college essay process was Not Fun. I can certainly agree with that when looking at the volume of work most high school seniors get themselves into e.g. the paperwork starts to ascend its usual two dimensions and acquire volume, because, well, theres a lot of it. Or, the electronic bits storing your apps start to acquire volume, but . hey, stop questioning my word usage. The other reason many people found the college essay to be Not Fun, though, and the reason I want to waste your time with here, was that they hated writing about themselves. Kevin and I, walking somewhere on campus, came to perhaps a far-too-hasty conclusion: thats stupid. We stopped (conversationally, that is), realized that might be not quite what we meant, and tried to describe what we actually meant. See, heres the thing the revolutionary bit what those people dont know is that the college essay should be *fun*. (eww, I sound like a guidance counselor I promise, Im still only one year past all yalls) (Yep, Im from Massachusetts, and I say that sometimes, mostly for kicks. People get angry at me for it) The college essay is a lot of work, but the work should not be bad; the reason behind that is fairly simple. You get to write about yourself! Youre not being self-centered, youre not facing a yawning audience; youre trying to show people the best parts about you! Now, granted, some people with low self-esteem might not like writing about themselves, but heres the cool bit: theyre not asking you to write about your faults! They want the best of you. The college essay is the time to shamelessly (but truthfully start lying and youll run into trouble, so please please please dont do it?) put your best foot forward and talk about you, the bits of you that you like most and that defin e you. That should be fun. If theres something about you that you wouldnt enjoy sharing with other people, then perhaps you shouldnt put it on your college application think first for a second about why you dont enjoy it. Its more than that, though; its not just writing about yourself. Its writing about your passions, your hobbies, your interests and your real drive; give them the reason you get up in the morning, give them the reason you stay up late, and give them the reason you like being you! Or if theres something in your life you want to change, give them that! The college essay, at least for most prompts (disclaimer: I havent looked at any, this year, including MITs _), is fairly flexible, because its designed to let you shine through, not just an essay. And are you ready for the best part? No matter what you write, your audience has to read it!* They get paid to read your college essay! Hah! And dont think its minimum wage just the other day, I was talking with Matt in the admissions office about which new Ferrari hes going to buy.** See, these people get money (cash, bills, dough!) to read YOUR essay about YOU. So why give them anything less? *I think so. Unless you dont write it, anyway. **Im making this up. However, Matt, if it were true that you can afford a Ferrari and are purchasing one, why havent you offered me rides yet? The college essay is your chance to shine; its a lot of work, but its where youre supposed to show people everything youre proud of, and everything youve worked for; if youve worked for things you care about, that should be a whole lot of fun. So procrastinators and re-writers alike (or anybody else still writing a college essay this year), go for it! You have till sometime tomorrow (check Matts post for the details) to get your essays in. Go make em great. Err, disclaimer: Despite being employed by MIT Admissions, I know very little about the college essay and how its evaluated. This is just my take on it. And Kevins. Dont take it as the official word of the admissions office, please; take it as one students blogular ramblings. (Also, good luck in March, everybody!) Have a happy 2010, and stop worrying about college so much go enjoy the rest of your senior year. Thats all, folks. -Cam

Are We Teaching Students How To Swim Or Handing Them Rocks As They Sink

posted on January 20, 2016 As an educator, I believe it is my duty to help students succeed. When I was a student, if I didn’t do my work (and I did this to myself one semester in the 5th grade), my teacher let me fail. My parents then coached me through the process of realizing that I’d messed up terribly, that I was better than that, and that I could pick up the pieces and rebuild myself as a successful student (which I did, making an â€Å"A† in both quarters following my failure). Unfortunately, many of our students don’t have this kind of support at home. Many of them don’t have parents telling them that they’re better than a zero, and to get their work turned in, or to go to the teacher and ask for help, or that they can do better next time. As I have taught my classes, and worked with my students, I’ve realized that the traditional methods of grading, setting unmovable deadlines, and letting students sink does not work in a world where students are swimming without a life jacket an a fathomless ocean. With all of that in mind, the article below by Jay Mathews of the Washington Post spoke to my heart as a teacher: All that said, I understand where traditional teachers are coming from. When I started teaching five years ago, I was right there with them. Be tough! Make the kids pull themselves up by the bootstraps! (Never mind some of them didn’t have boots, metaphorically speaking†¦) School veterans often say to that: â€Å"Are you kidding?† DuFour says they tell him â€Å"providing students with these second chances won’t prepare them for the harsh realities of the ‘real world’ or the ‘sink or swim’ environment of higher education, where students are expected to take full responsibility for their learning; requiring students to get additional help until they become proficient simply ‘enables’ students to give less than their best effort.† Ten or twenty years ago, this might have been true for the majority of students in suburbia. But today, so many  of the students in urban and rural communities are coming to school from  broken families, without the supports needed to succeed in the traditional system, that we must become the life preservers they need until they can mature and build the capacity for creating their own systems of success. When students enter my classroom†¦ I see kids who already believing they are failures. I see kids who think  can’t write or that they have nothing to say. I see kids who think they hate reading, but they just haven’t met the right book. I see kids who just think they aren’t good students. My goal is to help them think outside of that box. To this end, I have established the following policies in my English Language Arts classroom. Students can revise any assignment they’ve turned in on time for up to full credit. So, if Johnny turns in an essay and gets a 90 percent, he can correct his paper, and turn it in for up to a 100 percent. When I grade papers, particularly writing assignments, I include action statements that tell a student what they need to do in order to make a 100 percent on the paper. When I hand Johnny’s paper back to him, he might follow my instructions to add more details to the third paragraph, which will earn him back the points that he lost for leaving out those details in the first place. Ultimately, Johnny has to do the work to receive the points.   Students can turn in any late/missing assignment for up to 70 percent of credit. They can revise these assignments for up to 70 percent. This helps keep students out of the too-many-zeros hole, where some setup camp for the rest of the year. Every four weeks, we have a work day, where students can revise or makeup any assignment during class. I use this time to offer feedback on assignments, to help freshmen  clean out their stuffed-to-the-grills lockers, and generally encourage students to make revisions for overall grade improvement. You’d be amazed at how much work gets done — which means that students are actually having a self-led review session†¦Ã‚   In the interest of learning how to meet deadlines, all grades after that work day are set in stone. Last semester, I let students wait until the end of the semester, and that was a mess for me. So, in the interests of teacher sanity and frequent review, I have established the every-four-week policy. I insist my students take advantage of this opportunity, and my principal backs me up on this. He frequently (read: every Friday) calls any students who are failing or who have three or more zeros to the office and has a chat with them. Some sort of lunch detention may be involved. At any rate, students then flock to my room to turn suddenly-found papers in, find out what they’re missing. At least, that’s what happened last semester. This semester, my students seem to be more on top of things, so there has not been as much flocking. As  my principal, our supportive parents, and I work together, our kids  are building that capacity for, and learning how to attain, success. They are crawling out of their boxes, sometimes kicking and screaming (not always metaphorically†¦), but coming to terms with what it means to be a student.    Michelle WatersI am a secondary English Language Arts teacher, a University of Oklahoma student working on my Master’s of Education in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum with an concentration in English Education, and a NBPTS candidate. I am constantly seeking ways to amplify my students’ voices and choices.

Legalize The Weed Essay - 1240 Words

Marijuana is the flower of the cannabis plant, and if smoked, gives the smoker an euphoric high, but really has much more to offer than just the high. Using marijuana and the growing of hemp are presently illegal in the United States, with the exception of medicinal uses in some states. The legalization of marijuana has many advantages including for simple personal enjoyment, the usage of hemp and its by-products, and medicinal purposes. Why should marijuana be illegal when people just use it to help themselves enjoy their lives more? Economic Relations Between China And China - 869 Words

The United States has proved to be a prominent influence around the world whether or not it may have positively affected other countries. In some cases, the dependency of one allows for the growth of the other such as the instance of China. Although China stands as one of the biggest communist countries, statistics have shown that â€Å"China is 175.6% dependent on the U.S.† (Chang). Although both divergent from the other, the United States’ bilateral relationship with China is essential and necessary for their success and diplomacy. Through an economic standpoint, â€Å"the U.S. approach to its economic relations with China has two main elements: integrating China into the global, rules-based economic and trading system and expanding U.S. exporters and investors access to the Chinese market† (U.S. Relations). The United States stands at a national deficit of approximately $19,231,466,800,000 and counting (U.S. National Debt). On the other hand, China suffers with a $5,385,184,290,350 national debt (NationalDebtClocks). To put things into perspective, from those 19 trillion, the US owes about 1.16 trillion to China (Wilson). The dependency is clearly there. Countries do not merely borrow money for the sack of borrowing money, rather from a place of necessity to attain what money may be able to offer its citizens. A Paradox Can Be A Very Confusing Concept, For There Never

A paradox can be a very confusing concept, for there never seems to be a right answer or an end to the problem. The old poem of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight exemplifies the puzzling problem of a paradox. Throughout the whole poem it glorifies courtesy, loyalty, and trust-worthiness. To be a true and noble knight, Gawain must exhibit these qualities. Through the poem though, it shows how courtesy does not work in reality. This paradox seems to have no end because the poem emphasizes courtesy, but it does not work out for Gawain in the end, and yet still he needs to uphold it and glorify it. As endless and the paradox may seem, there is a possible solution of upholding courtesy as best as possible. Upholding courtesy will not please†¦show more content†¦Gawain was courteous through his loyalty to the King because he risked his life in order to save Arthur. Gawain even said, â€Å"†¦ ‘bid me abandon this bench and stand by you there so that I without discourtesy might be excused from the table (16).† This text is important because it shows the courtesy of Gawain. Gawain, before sacrificing his life for the king, he asked to be removed from the table so he is not â€Å"discourteous†. He was courteous through his actions because he did not want to disrespect the king. Usually, one would think if there would be a self-sacrifice, they would spring into action. This line is odd, for Gawain asked to be dismissed from the table so he would not disrespect the king. So in this short line, Gawain not only was courteous through his action of self-sacrifice, but through respect also. Although being courteous seems like it is working out, Gawain learns that it can be a challenge. When it comes to serving multiple people, courtesy seems to fail. For example, the time Gawain spent with the host around Christmas is a great example. Gawain is forced to be free-giving, friendly, and show chastity and chivalry, for he must uphold the qualities on his shield to be a true and noble knight. What ensues is a conflict of epic proportions between Stanley and Blanche, with Stella torn between the two. Each character operates ithin his or her own alternate reality. Through Stella, Stanley and Blanche’s self- deception within this conflict, Williams demonstrates how and to what extent individuals create their own realities in order to maintain the fapde of an existence they deem acceptable. Blanche, more so that any of character demonstrates an individual’s ability to live in an alternate reality. Blanche creates an illusion that helps her cope with the type of person she has become because of tragedy she experiences. Blanche’s husband commits suicide after she makes a cruel statement to him when she discovers his affair with a man. Blanche deals with her guilt and loneliness with destructive behavior: she drinks excessively and engages in sexually promiscuous behavior. Ultimately, Blanche is run out of town and comes to live with Stella with nowhere else to go. The facts behind Blanche’s story are sordid. But she does not acknowledge them or even live in a reality where they exist. â€Å"After all, a woman’s charm is fifty percent illusion† (2. 29). Blanche creates an illusion where she remains a proper Southern lady who is wanted by rich gentlemen. She arrives at Stella’s house wearing pearls, white gloves and a hat, â€Å"looking as if she were arriving t a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district† (1. 14). She clings to her Southern aristocratic roots and labels Stanley a â€Å"brute† because of his social status (4. 2). She will not acknowledge that she has fallen on hard times, but instead adopts a reality as it â€Å"ought to be† (9. 43). She strives to convince others to adopt her reality to reinforce her fantasy world (â€Å"l misrepresent things to them. I don’t tell the truth, I tell what ought to be truth†) (9. 43). For Blanche, an alternate reality is not Just desirable or more acceptable, it is necessary. Blanche needs the illusion because she annot exist without it. She cannot see herself as she truly is and go on. When Stanley shatters the illusion, Blanche is destroyed along with it. Like Blanche, Stella also creates a false reality to make her existence acceptable. Stella’s alternate reality does not permeate her life like Blanche’s. But, it is equally destructive. Stella creates an illusion of Stanley as a loving husband to maintain her illusion that everything is fine in her marriage. Stella’s illusion of Stanley is evident on two occasions†when she returns to Stanley after he beats her and when she refuses to believe that Stanley has raped Blanche. When Stanley beats Stella, Stella’s self-deception becomes evident. It is clear at that point that Stanleys cruelty extends to Stella in their marriage. Blanche tries to convince Stella to leave Stanley. Ironically, Blanche, who clings to illusion herself, tells Stella that she must, â€Å"Pull (her)self together and face the facts† (4. 48). Stella, however, opts for her illusion. She returns to Stanley and maintains the illusion ot ner nappy marriage. Stella again opts tor ner alternate reality when she refuses to believe that Stanley raped Blanche. Stella recognizes that he cannot maintain the illusion of what her marriage is if she believes Blanche. So, she makes a conscious decision to reject Blanche’s story and maintain her illusion. At the end of the play, Stella explains her decision to her friend Eunice: â€Å"l couldn’t believe her story and go on living with Stanley† (1 1. 40). In reply, Eunice states, â€Å"Don’t ever believe it. Life has got to go on. No matter what happens, you’ve got to keep going. † (1 1. 41). Eunice’s reply suggests that she recognizes that Stella is deceiving herself about Stanley in order to maintain the illusion of her marriage. Stella’s statement also suggests a degree of awareness that the illusion of her marriage would be destroyed if she accepted Blanche’s story. Stella is only able to maintain her false reality by rejecting the truth about a brutal rape against her sister. Through Stella actions, Williams demonstrates the extent that an individual will go to in order to maintain an illusion. Both Stella and Blanche’s lives are mired in illusion. Williams suggests that perhaps Stanleys is as well toa lesser degree. Williams betrays Stanley as a forthright man who speaks truthfully and plainly. From the time e meets Blanche, Stanley is obsessed with revealing Blanche’s lies and deceptions. But, ironically, even Stanley creates an alternate reality that he is better able to accept. After he has driven Blanche insane by his brutal rape, Stanley goes to his family and presents the image of a loving husband and father as Blanche is taken away. Stanleys alternate reality mirrors the one that Stella has created. In his illusion he is a loving father and husband rather than a cruel bully. So, through Stanley, Williams demonstrates that even those who are firmly seated in reality engage in self-deception to maintain an acceptable fapde. Williams’ message in Streetcar seems to be that humans tend to make their own reality when the real one is not to their liking. Blanche, Stella and even Stanley toa lesser degree create false realities. Their illusions cloak actual realities which they are unable or unwilling to bear. The illusions they create allow them to adopt an existence that is acceptable to them†one that is in no way similar to the truth of their lives. Works Cited Eliot, T. The accounting policy has been amended, once it was called AASB116 and AASB 138. In addition to this there are other accounting principles and standards used by the business organsation. The company is also following AASB 2015-3, which is an amendment to the Australian Accounting Standards arising from the withdrawal of AASB 1031 Materiality (Annual Report, 2017). Apart from this AASB 2015-4, amendment to Australian Accounting Standard is also implemented which requires financial reporting requirement for Australian groups that have a parent company in foreign. After adopting these standards and accounting policies the financial statement of the company has become more effective and requires fewer changes to be made. This accounting policy includes the classification and measurements of expected loss occurred through the damage of assets. AASB 15 is also implemented in the accounting policies; it is related with the revenue from contracts with the customers (Annual Report, 2017). This accounting policy is made in compliance with the IFRS and international Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This method specifies the revenue that has been raised from the revenue contracts. Assess Accounting Flexibility The company after merger has become more competitive and efficient in its operations. The top level management of the company has become more responsible towards their decision making power. The company has also showed responsible behavior towards its customer base. The management of the company is the one which is responsible for the implementation of the accounting policies in the company. In Afterpay Touch the task of formulating accounting policy is also done by the top management of the company (Annual Report, 2017). Before formulating the accounting policies, the top level management analyses varied spectrum of the information and data about the accounting standards that are prevalent in the regional and in the international market. It is quite important for a business organsation to select and adopt such accounting policy that works in compliance with the international standards because it is very significant to maintain harmony in the accounting principles. The organization Afterpay Touch has adopted various kinds of accounting policies which is popular in the international market in order to remain competitive and efficient in performance. The company is working on the guidelines of AASB and in addition to this the company has also adopted accounting policies that are in compliance with the IFRS (Annual Report, 2017). In addition to this the company has also formulated its accounting policies in compliance with the Accounting Standards of America. This shows the company has adopted a flexible approach towards the accounting policies. However this approach is completely valid as this is a kind of consolidated approach of all the known accounting standards (Wolk, Dodd and Rozycki, 2012). This is being done in order to gain competitive edge over its competitors and achieve efficiency in its performance so that it can become more competitive in the international market. Evaluate Accounting Strategy The flexibility in the accounting policies allows the managers to plan their future courses of action in a strategic manner. The company is facing acute competition with Zippay. It is another company operating in Australia and is serving its customers with the same concept of buying before and paying for the same later period. The company has also gained a large customer base and is giving tough competition to Afterpay Touch. The accounting norms of Zippay are quite different from Afterpay Touch (Review of Buy Now Pay Later Solutions for Australian Merchants Afterpay Vs Zippay, 2017) The company has prepared its financial statement in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Annual Report 2016). Zippays accounting principles are made in compliance with the AASB and IFRS, whereas, Afterpay Touch has formulated its accounting policies in accordance to both AASB and IFRS, apart from this it also has also made its accounting policies on the guidelines of Accounting Standards of Americ a. This made Afterpay Touch more efficient and effective in the international market. The company has constructed a Remuneration Committee in which a fixed remuneration and variable remuneration for short term or long term incentive is established for the managers and executive officers. For the purpose of distributing and deciding revenue an external individual is appointed so that no bias decision can be made (Sheridan, 2016). A Share based plan is also formulated by the organsation in which the share option plan is made in order to align the objective of the firm with the individual objectives. The management of the company has identified some accounting policies for which significant judgment and estimates are made. Share based payment transactions is one area for the same. The accounting estimates and assumptions related to equity settled share based payments would have no impact on the carrying amount of assets and liabilities (Annual Report, 2017). In addition to this, estimation of useful lives of intangible assets is another aspect in which adjustments regard ing the judgments and estimations are done. The damage to intangible assets, the carrying cost of the intangible asset is analyzed against its recoverable amount. Assumptions, judgments and estimations are used in the calculation aspect. Another aspect of estimations and judgment is calculated in the taxation aspect of the firm. Differences arising between the actual results and the estimations made. This can also make changes in the future adjustments of taxes (Annual Report, 2017). The accounting policies of the Afterpay Touch is formulated and designed by the top level management. They are formulated in such a way that they can help the company in achieving their long term and short term objective in an effective manner. Evaluate the Quality of Disclosure The disclosure provided is quite adequate and it has covered various aspects of the company. The financial statements have provided a detailed analysis of several aspects that can help the firm in gaining competitive edge in the market (Mintz, 2013). The footnotes have provided information about the accounting policies that has been followed in the firm. In addition to this, it has also discussed the amendments that have been done in the accounting policies. The accounting policies and standards followed in the firm were based on GAAP standard either directly or indirectly and it did not restrict the firm (Walton, 2011). The segment disclosure has covered various aspects and has explained the same in detailed manner. The segment aspect has discussed that the date for merger was decided to be 30th June and the statements of Comprehensive Income includes only the transactions of the company (Annual Report, 2017). Identify Potential Red Flags The annual report of Afterpay though provides all the necessary financial information required by the end-users for making decisions. However, there are some issues of concern identified in the annual report of the company that requires more disclosure discussed as red flags in the present section. There is some unexplained changes in accounting such as the company is not yet complying with the changes made in the methods of calculating deprecation and amortization as per amendments introduced in AASB 116 and AASB 138. The company has stated in its annual report that the amendments made in AASB standards are not yet effective in the current reporting period of the company. As such, the company needs to provide more disclosure regarding the reasons for its non-compliance with the AASB standards amendments. There is also unusual increase in the revenue amount of the company in the year 2017 as analyzed from its income statement that requires proper disclosure explaining the transaction s that lead to huge increase in its gross profit in the year 2017that can be depicted as follows from the income statement (Annual Report: Afterpay, 2017): Source: https://www.afterpaytouch.com/images/APT_2017_4E_Annual-Report.pdf TgAlso, there is unusual increase in its trade receivables of the company in the year 2017 as compared to the year 2016 depicted from its balance sheet as follows: Source: https://www.afterpaytouch.com/images/APT_2017_4E_Annual-Report.pdf The company has also acquired 100% voting shares of Touchcorp by merging with the company. This is done by the company for gaining advantage from the skill and product lines of Touchcorp. However, the merger has incurred an expenditure to the company of about $1,558,157 and that is mainly responsible for the increase in operating loss at the end of reporting period if 2017 as depicted from its income statement (Annual Report: Afterpay, 2017): Source: https://www.afterpaytouch.com/images/APT_2017_4E_Annual-Report.pdf In addition to this, the related party transactions carried out by the company can also be recognized as issue of major concern that requires more disclosure in the future financial reports developed by the company. The company has become the parent entity of Afterpay and Touchcorp in the year 2017 and thus requires more disclosures regarding the amount of transactions that incurred in the current reporting period of the related parties (Annual Report: Afterpay, 2017). Compliant with the Conceptual Framework The conceptual framework is a normative theory that requires identifying the general purpose of financial reporting. It also deals with the accounting guidance which is in compliance with the current market trends. The normative theory is the one which is mostly followed in organization in present context because this theory deals with optimal accounting approaches and it helps in selecting accounting procedures that are relevant in a particular situation (Jensen, 2001). The firm has made various amendments in accounting procedures in order to remain competitive in the market (Pietra, McLeay and Ronen, 2013). Conclusion Thus, it can be inferred from the overall discussion held in the report that accounting policies and conventions developed by the accounting standard-setting boards need to be applied by the businesses for developing the financial reports. This is essential to promote transparency in the business operations and thus achieve the trust of shareholders. References Annual Report 2016. Zip Money.
